Here’s Everything We Know About Season 3 of You

By | August 7, 2020

Warning! Spoilers ahead for season two of You. Stop now if you haven’t seen the season yet.

Season two of You somehow managed to be even crazier than the first—from Joe actually trying to be a good guy (and then failing), to the reveal that Love is actually more of a psychopath than Joe is, the season set viewers on a roller coaster ride of emotions. You‘s second season ended with Joe and Love moving to the suburbs ahead the birth of their child, although it seems like Joe will soon set his eyes on their next door neighbor as his next obsession.

Season two left on such a crazy cliffhanger that fans are already wondering if and when the next season will be out.

Will there be a season 3 of You?

In January 2020, Netflix announced that season three was officially a go.

You‘s co-creator and showrunner Sera Gamble had previously told Cosmopolitan UK that there was already an idea in the works for the show’s third season. “First of all, it’s up to the powers that be. We hope that a lot of people will watch the show and that it gets to continue. I will say that we have an idea for season three that is so exciting that people talk about it in the [writer’s] room every day,” Gamble explained. “My fingers are crossed. I’ll just say, I hope we get the chance to keep making the show.”

When will You season 3 premiere?

If the show follows the release schedules for the previous two seasons, we can probably expect the new season to premiere sometime in mid to late 2020, with the trailer coming a few months before then.

However, the ongoing coronavirus caused a pause in production, so we’re likely to see the You season three in 2021. However, the show’s writers are still working on the script, and they’ve kept fans updated with a cool look at their virtual writer’s rom.

Who will be in the cast of You season 3?

Penn Badgley will be back as Joe, and Victoria Pedretti is set to return as Love. It’s also likely that Ambyr Childers will reprise her role as Candace, and John Stamos will probably make an appearance as Dr. Nicky. And while fans were unsure if Jenna Ortega would come back to play Ellie (her character moves away during the season two finale), she recently spoke to Teen Vogue about the third season, and it seems like we haven’t seen the last of her character.

Carmela Zumbado and James Scully are almost certainly not returning for season three, as both of their characters (Delilah and Forty) were killed during season two.

What is season 3 of You about?

Author Caroline Kepnes is currently working on a third and fourth book in the You series, and Entertainment Weekly reported that the third book will follow Joe and Love as they move to the Pacific Northwest.

In December 2019, Gamble talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the new season:

“I will say that when we originally sold the show, we very broadly described it as each season would be a new love obsession and a new world. Season one is Beck in New York, and season two is Love in L.A., and so we are evoking where we would like to go, which is to a much more suburban, insular world where Joe would be a complete fish out of water.

I think to me, the most important thing about that last scene is just it is confirmation that Joe is still Joe in a way that’s not going to be great for Joe. That he has not learned that he cannot just keep looking for the next person to attach his hopes and dreams to that way. It seems clear that he’s falling into some version of that same pattern. I can’t say that we know exactly what a season three would be, but I can say things won’t go well for Joe.”

Also in December 2019, Penn Badgley accidentally revealed a detail about Love. Badgley was speaking to Entertainment Tonight when he said that, “She [Love] doesn’t appear to be the same kind of person. She doesn’t appear to be the same kind of predator. She doesn’t appear to be the same kind of…you know, dare I say, in the third season – oh, god!”

What are some theories about season 3 of You?

As you can expect, that ambiguous ending at the end of season two left a lot to interpretation, and fans are filling in the blanks on their own. A lot of people believe that the next door neighbor seen at the end of the season will be Joe’s mom, (although Badgley shot down that rumor) while others say that it’s just a random new character.

And remember Milo, the guy that Love briefly dated when she and Joe broke up mid-season? There’s a theory that he might actually be the father of Love’s baby. Another Love-centered theory is that she actually killed her late husband, James, and it’s an idea that tons of fans brought up even as season two was airing.

And while Ellie has moved to an undisclosed city, fans believe that she will either a. expose Joe with Forty’s movie b. kill Joe and Love for killing her sister or c. expose and kill Joe. Jenna Ortega herself responded to the theory, and while she isn’t into the revenge killing plot (“To bring her back and make her a murderer like Joe defeats the purpose because that’s not her character and that’s not in her heart.”), she does believe that Forty’s movie will get released.

“I’m hoping that somehow she gets roped back into L.A. because she creates this short film or this film and directs it and it gets a lot of attention…if it could be Dark Face of Love, that would be great,” Ortega told Teen Vogue.
