  • In a new YouTube video, family medicine physician Dr. Mikhail “Mike” Varshavski discusses popular coronavirus myths and conspiracy theories.
  • Some of the most outrageous theories include a reference to The Simpsons.
  • Unfortunately, he explains that vodka—while useful in quarantine for drinking—is also not a viable sanitizing method.

Finding information about coronavirus isn’t that difficult online. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find accurate information about coronavirus. Enter: YouTube’s Dr. Mike. On his YouTube channel, Dr. Mike—also known as Mihail Varshavski—debunks popular myths and conspiracy theories about the coronavirus, and some of them are wild.

In the video, Varshavski welcomes his viewers to a series on his channel called “The Wednesday Checkup.” On the agenda? Common and widely circulated theories about the coronavirus (and some straight up silly ones) with a Shane Dawson-esque look at why they’re false.

The theories that Dr. Mike looks at run the gamut of believability. First, he starts with the idea that the government is behind the spread in part thanks to assistance from Bill and Melinda Gates’ foundation. Of course, he’s quick to dismiss this theory and moves on to other more serious and more plausible ideas. From the idea that you should be drinking water every 15 minutes (which is true-ish) to hand driers being effective at killing the virus (not true), he moves through some somewhat believable ideas before getting into some of the most far-fetched.

Perhaps the most outrageous, though, is the idea that The Simpsons—yes, as in Bart and Marge—predicted the virus. Dr. Mike quickly dismisses the idea that any show or book predicted this exact pandemic, but he is quick to explain that scientists and experts knew that another pandemic was possible, just not this exact one.
