Schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as you find out that you’re pregnant so that they can start reviewing your medical history and they can keep a record of your body weight and blood pressure. These measurements help to keep track of your health during your pregnancy.
1. Diet
During pregnancy, it is important that your diet should be adequate and nutritious. Now that you’re eating for two, you need to add some extra calories to your diet. Eating a balanced diet is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your child. It is very important to meet your protein and calcium requirements. You need 70 grams of protein during pregnancy as compared to 45 grams before pregnancy. Also, make sure to eat 4 or more servings of dairy each day.
But do not intake unpasteurized milk products as they might have bacteria that can cause infections. Also, make sure to avoid not fully cooked food and do not eat more than 2 or 3 servings of fish per week. Make sure to avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish as these fish have high level of mercury that can be harmful for the baby. Keep your caffeine consumption under check. Do not drink more than 2 cups of caffeinated drinks per day.

Unless you have complications, it is wise to do some or the other kind of exercise during pregnancy. Exercise helps promote a healthy lifestyle and helps ease the discomfort. It is advisable to do at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. But make sure not to overdo it. If you feel dizziness or any kind of discomfort during exercise then ease up a bit and consult your doctor.

3. Alcohol and cigarette smoking
Alcohol, cigarette or tobacco, drugs are a big no during pregnancy!
Avoid drinking any kind of alcoholic drinks during pregnancy as alcohol quickly passes from your bloodstream though the placenta and umbilical cord to the baby which can harm the development of the baby’s brain and organs.
Smoking is also terrible for you and your baby. Make sure you are neither an active nor a passive smoker.
Drugs can prove to be very harmful for you during pregnancy. So, it is wise to completely swear off all illicit drugs. Any drugs you use can get into the baby’s bloodstream as well, which can prove to be hazardous. Studies suggest that marijuana may restrict the baby’s growth and may cause withdrawal symptoms in them and using cocaine can restrict the flow of blood to the uterus and may lead to miscarriage, growth problems, placental abruption, or premature delivery.

All in all, it is very important for you to stay healthy for your baby to be healthy. Follow these instructions, visit your doctor regularly, educate yourself about it, read various books and above all be happy, that’s the most important thing to take care of.
